This is the Youth section Awards and Fun Day.

I know that it is the day following the End of Season Ball but please make every effort to turn up and either enjoy the day, help out or take a hands on approach to assisting the Youth players in enjoying themselves. Those who attended last year will know what is on offer; from tag games to rugby rounders (Julian) to the tug of war between Boomer and most of the Youth section.

The day’s festivities will commence at 11am with the Awards being presented @1pm. There will be a variety of snacks, drinks and a BBQ available.

Your support will be greatly appreciated as we intend to get some media attention and, as you well know, there has been negative press towards the Club over the last month or so. The more that attend and show how much fun is to be had at Shoreham Rugby Club – particularly for the Youth players- the better.

As previously stated, it is the intention of Shoreham RFC to improve the Cricket Pavilion in Buckingham Park for the benefit of all users within the community. To back up this commitment we will invest a minimum of £25,000 to improve the changing facilities, the Café, and the exterior. The toilet block will remain in control of the Council. Ownership of the entire Cricket Pavilion block remains with Adur District Council.

The current café tenant operates on a commercial basis paying a minimum business rent to Adur District Council. Both the Council and Shoreham Rugby Club have been in contact with Amelia to discuss her continuing status as tenant and have done on numerous occasions during the last two years. However, she has declined to provide a business plan or, indeed, respond to requests for information or proposals for partnership working. Instead, we find ourselves vilified in the local press and portrayed as the wrong-doers when all we are attempting to do is improve a commercial enterprise housed within a community building. It seems to have been overlooked by many, but Shoreham Rugby Club players, parents and coaches actually enjoy the warmth and refreshments that the Cafe offers especially on a snow-covered Sunday at Buckingham Park!

Resulting from Amelia’s inertia we find ourselves in the position that we will be seeking alternative tenants to provide the high level of service for refreshments that users of Buckingham Park deserve. The Cafe will remain open as a commercial outlet– as it is now with Amelia and her staff – but with funds being raised to help support a local club. It is our intention for the opening times to be unchanged as far as possible.

We are delighted to be assisting Adur District Council in revitalising facilities in the community that we work and live in.

General Information on SRFC

Shoreham Rugby Club works closely with the park warden and pays an annual ground rent for the two rugby pitches it uses in Buckingham Park together with use of the changing facilities inside the old Cricket pavilion. This is all paid for through volunteer fundraising.

We currently provide outdoor exercise for 2 adult teams and @ 130 youth players ranging in age from 6 to 18. In addition, we are pleased to provide training for both children and teachers within local schools - this supports our dedication to continue contributing positively to the area where we live through delivering our Community Seal of Approval standards.

To highlight our support for child welfare all volunteers undergo a Criminal Records Bureau check to ensure their suitability, all coaches are qualified and we have several trained First Aid qualified members.

Shoreham Rugby Club is a local community rugby club run entirely by volunteers for local children and young people. It has agreed to secure a minimum of £25,000 and invest it in improving the Pavilion.

As the only rugby club based in Adur, Shoreham Rugby Club have been working closely with Adur District Council for four years to secure a permanent base. In May 2006, Shoreham Rugby Club moved to Buckingham Park, and Adur District Council made a public declaration to support the club in developing the plans for a new Clubhouse based in the Park. The Club, with support from the Council, submitted an unsuccessful £500,000 lottery grant application to completely rebuild the old Cricket Pavilion in Buckingham Park into a purpose built community facility with an extended Café and outdoor eating terrace.

Consequently, the Council and the Rugby Club have agreed that the only way forward is to undertake a refurbishment programme of the Old Pavilion. It is in an extremely poor state and needs significant funds to take it up to the minimum standards required today. The building itself is not in keeping with the rest of Buckingham Park which has been home to generations of local children. Adur Council do not have the money available to undertake this work. Shoreham Rugby Club has made a commitment to secure funding to improve both the internal and external facilities of the old Pavilion. In an agreement only just approved by the Council, Shoreham Rugby Club will be investing a minimum of £25,000 to improve the changing facilities, the Café, and the exterior. The toilet block will remain under the control of the Council.

It has always been the intention of Adur District Council and Shoreham Rugby Club to maintain, and indeed enhance, the Café facilities for all Park users. The Council have sought discussions with the tenant of the Cafe during the last 12 months to discuss options for developing the Pavilion. The Cup Cakes Cafe will remain open with Amelia and her staff supplying refreshments whilst these discussions continue.

Adur District Council Director of Services, Peter Latham said “Improving community facilities is a Council priority and we are delighted to be working in Partnership with Shoreham Rugby Club. Thanks to the hard work and enthusiasm of Shoreham Rugby Club’s Volunteers we are going to be seeing improved facilities for Buckingham Park. The Council and the Rugby Club have both recognised the importance of a café being open in the park throughout the year”.

Shoreham Rugby Club President Simon Edgar said “Shoreham Rugby Football Club was founded in 1993 as a local team. Five years ago the Club set out to transform itself into a thriving community sports club for all to enjoy rugby. Through an ambitious development programme the Club has established a flourishing youth section for children and young people between the ages of 6 -18 years old. We are now delighted to be entering the next stage by providing a home for Shoreham Rugby Club and to be revitalising facilities in the community that we work and live in.”

Despite the wet weather of the last week, the Buckingham park surface held up for the Shoreham team to play the fast attacking rugby that it has become the norm, over the last 12 months.

Within ten minutes of the start Shoreham opened the scoring with a typical try from the prolific Ben Cole stepping inside would-be tacklers. The chance came from the impressive pack who, despite welcoming the usual centre Gavin Cox into an unaccustomed Number 8 position, pushed the experienced Newick pack all over the pitch for the full 80 minutes. The second try came from the pack turning over a Newick scrum, with the ball being distributed at pace by the impressive Aspinall and Philips, down the line to Adam Shaw who crossed in the corner, and being converted by Shaw like the first try to give Shoreham a 14 - 0 lead.

A turn over which came around from Evans and Brown led to Bryn Phillips stepping outside his opposite number and inside the Number 12, to cross under the posts and give Shaw his third easy conversion and give Shoreham a half time lead of 21 - 0. Despite three Shoreham tries, the moment of the half, definately the game, and possibly the season, came when the Newick full back returned the ball with pace after a wayward kick, only to be met by Leon Kingett the big second row, who delivered a hit which deserved to be videoed and posted on YouTube for others around the world to appreciate.

Half time came at the wrong time for Shoreham, as players discussed the idea of cricket scores and how many tries could be scored. This instantly blew up in their faces as a determined and aggressive Newick pack came back at Shoreham, scoring within ten minutes of the restart, when the ball was passed down the line and touched down in the corner.

This re-focussed 1 to 15 on the Shoreham team, and they went back to the game plan which worked so well against Worthing and Holbrook; tough defence, and shipping the ball to the pace out wide - letting those players do their thing and score the points as they had all season. A further two tries in the second half from Ben Cole gave him his hat trick, and with it a jug for the other players, from the hat trick hero. Other try scores included Aspinall, darting from the base of a ruck 5 metres out and forcing his way over the line and Cox busting over the line after a free flowing move down the line, after some solid work from the pack.

A very pleasing victory for Shoreham, and some outstanding performances particularly from Adam Shaw who scored a total of 17 points, one try and six conversions and obviously the hat trick hero Ben Cole, both young guys who hopefully will shape Shoreham RFC future in the coming seasons. Shoreham also welcomed back three legends of seasons gone by; Magnus Nelson, Iain Morrison and Mark Whitcomb, with Pete Basford on the sidelines, with everyone hopeful that some if not all are seen regularly in the Green and Gold of Shoreham next season.

An update on the league situation is that before the game against Newick, Shoreham, Worthing 3rd's and Horsham 2nd's were all level on 27 points, and Newick on 30 points, with 2 games of the season to go. With the victory Shoreham will hopefully leap frog Horsham and Worthing, into 7th place. The last game of the season is away to Horsham 2nd team on the 12th April, with a victory being targeted to give the Shoreham team momentum into the 2008/09 season.

After 5 minutes of great defence Shoreham won a penalty and cleared their lines with a great touch find in extremely heavy winds. With 20 - 25 minutes gone and the game still level at 0 - 0 and some good defence shown by both teams Shoreham got a scrum. Dave Falk, returning from Lewes 2's for this one off game, picked from the base, before offloading in the tackle to Adam Shaw who outpaced the covering defence to score, Alex Aspinall converted to make it 7 - 0.

Disappointed by conceding the score, Holbrook, who were 2nd in the league, came out hard and scored through picking and driving at the base of the ruck after making easy metres due to Shoreham's inability to play to the rules; conceding 4 soft penalties by being offside. They converted to level the game level at 7 all.

With the last play of the half Alex Aspinall scored another great try to add to his collection that he seems to be scoring as of late, with now Adam converting this to level the half time score at 14 - 7.

THe half time chat was all about playing what is in front of you and continuing to deliver the big hits that inspire everyone in the team to run that extra metre, whilst remembering to stay onside, as otherwise this good Holbrook team would punish us.

In the second half the weather worsened and unfortunately the attacking rugby suffered, but Shoreham were big in defence making the Holbrook team knock on a number of times. Holbrook did manage another score, however, to bring themselves back into the game, after Shoreham's midfield got stuck into a ruck and Shoreham forwards found themselves up against pacey wingers and nimble centres, who combined for the unconverted score, 14 - 12.

James Garner was the scorer of Shoreham's last try, a well worked score with the forwards and backs combining well firstly in a maul situation which dragged a few Holbrook defenders in, and then from the resulting playing to ensure James had a free run to the line, for 21 - 12 lead. Aspinall converting.

Holbrook again scored and Shoreham held out for the win with a big defensive stand at the end, to ensure the relegation battle carries on for one more league with with Newick their next opponents who before this weekend could still be caught for 7th place in the league. The game is at Buckingham Park on the 29th of March, 3pm kick off, with many old faces from Shoreham RFC histroy expected to make an appearence on the sideline.

The boys played a total of four games in their Pool. First up were a strong Chichester outfit, who had heavily beaten our boys only a month or so back. Chichester quickly asserted their authority on the game to quickly ran in a couple of tries. However, they didn’t have it all their own way and some excellent tackling, particularly from George H, James F and Charlie H along with some strong pushes from the team almost resulted in a score for Shoreham. After halftime, Chichester scored a further three tries, before a storming run from Seb saw Shoreham record their first score of the tournament. A final result of 5-1 to Chichester was a little harsh on the lads for the fighting performance they gave.

Second up were Midhurst and a close fought game once again saw some excellent tackling (one in particular being a try saving challenge from George D) and much better rucking (which pleased coach Stewart!). An even contest was decided by one try to Midhurst.

A similar contest ensued with Horsham in the next game and once again the boys lost to the only try of the game.

The final game saw the boys playing Crawley, a team we haven’t played before. An early try from George D was soon equalised by the opposition, before James F put Shoreham back in front as halftime approached. The second half saw Seb charge his way through from the kick-off for his second try of the day. Further tries from Will and another from James F put the game beyond doubt, before Crawley scored a super try with the last play of the game. A final result of 5-2 to the boys was just reward for a morning of hard endeavour, good passing and solid tackling.

Coach Stewart was pleased with the performance, awarding the player of the tournament to Seb and praising all the boys for their attitude. Although we may have lost three of the four games, the gap is definitely closing between us and the other teams and the boys should feel proud that the hard work they are putting in at training is paying off.

I can’t sign off without saying thanks to Stewart for his coaching and pep talks (ably aided by Andrew), Tim for refereeing and the parents who, as always, provided vocal encouragement.
